Monday's Assignment

Good morning! Which way do you think the market will go this week? What's this picture all about?
I think the market going down this week.

This week's theme
Did you laugh? What's the meaning of "to break even"?  收支平衡

This week's theme is on Banking and Finances--Loans, Mortgages, and Investments. To begin with, we're going to have a look at sentence structure and an article on online brokers

本周的主题是——银行和融资贷款、抵押贷款和投资。首先,我们要看一看句子结构和文章在网上经纪公司。

Here are your tasks:

  1. Watch this simple and harder video on sentence diagramming
1.Outline the 1st sentence of this article, "It's not ...."
It’s not a beauty contest, but the 17th annual Globe and Mail ranking of online brokers does put a lot of emphasis on looks.
It is contest.
It is not  contest
       2.Outline the 2nd, “The dozen …."
The dozen firms in the ranking have converged on cost to a point where sub-$10 commissions for all are near universal.
Firms have converged.
3.Compare your sentence outlines with at least 3 partners.
4.Looking at the table of “Broker and Final Grade,” learn all new words/expressions and write 5 T/F statements

         2.Role play: Stock Market
1.Listen, and then practise out loud in pairs.

2.Publish your audio recording on your blog.
Heather: What’s the matter? You look terrible.

Paul: Haven’t you seen the paper? The stock market went down a lot yesterday. The NASDAQ is down 100 points and the Dow is down 30! My portfolio is in big trouble.

Heather: I knew you had some stock options in this company, but I didn’t know you were so heavily invested in the market.

Paul: I’m invested in the bond market, in derivatives, and I have shares in a lot of companies that took a nosedive yesterday.

Heather: I’m sure you have a good stockbroker who has made sure that your portfolio is diversified and you have different kinds of securities.

Paul: That’s my problem. I don’t have a stockbroker. I decided to invest on my own and to go for less secure stocks hoping for a better return. I thought I could tell the difference between a bear and a bull market as well as the brokers. I guess I was wrong.

Heather: The drop in stock prices won’t last. I’m sure the market will rebound. Just don’t panic and sell everything. The old saying, “buy low, sell high,” is still a good idea, I think.

Paul: I know, I know. I won’t do anything stupid— that is, I won’t do anything even more stupid. I’ll wait to see what happens before taking any action.

Heather: That’s a good idea. Come on. I’ll buy you lunch.

Paul: Thanks. Now that I’m poor, I won’t say ‘no’ to your charity.

Friday's Assignment

After you see today's assignment, you might exclaim, TGIF!

Think about your view of Canada before coming here. How was it similar or different from this:

Here are your tasks:
  1. Role play: Reading a World Map
Greg: What are you doing with that map and that globe?

Julianna: I’m trying to keep track of Carmen as she travels from country to country. I just got another postcard from her today.

Greg: I’m not sure I like the idea of my daughter traveling around the world with a group of people for three months. It’s not safe.

Julianna: She can take care of herself. You know she’s the adventurous type. Give her a compass and she can find her way around anywhere. Help me find Nauru on this map. I don’t even know what continent it’s on. I was never any good at geography.

Greg: All right. You look above the equator and I’ll look below it, but couldn’t you just look it up on the Internet? It would be easy to find the latitude and longitude of this place.

Julianna: This is more fun. I sort of feel like I’m on an adventure myself.

Greg: I can’t make heads or tails of this map. It’s not to scale and this legend is all wrong!

Julianna: It doesn’t matter. We just need to find the place name, and then I can put a pin in this map showing where’s she’s been.

Greg: I have a better idea. I’ll look it up on the Internet and get you all of the vital statistics you’d want, like its location, okay?

Julianna: Forget it. Sometimes it’s more fun doing things the hard way.

2.Read this article, and in your own words write down 10 facts that you learnt from it.

DAHLIA: Would You Like Canada To Adopt Turks And Caicos As Our 11th Province?

You can be sitting on a Canadian beach, sipping a beverage in a coconut, on a hot, sunny day – in the winter – if Canada adopts Turks and Caicos.
The federal NDP may debate this is at its upcoming convention, but this a conversation that started all of the way back in 1917 when former prime minister Robert Borden asked Great Britain to give us the little piece of paradise.

Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory comprised of 40 low-lying coral islands in the Atlantic, southeast of the Bahamas … basically located in heaven.
Back in 2014, the Caribbean island’s Premier, Rufus Ewing, was open to this, but Canada’s former foreign affairs minister John Baird sunblocked the idea of a tropical Canadian province.
Oh, by the by, right now in Turks and Caicos it’s sunny and 26 degrees Celsius.
